Best Down Comforters Reviewed
There is nothing as luxurious and welcoming as a bed with a quality down comforter. Down has been used as a bedding material by royalty and the rich for hundreds of years. Today, a quality down comforter is more affordable than ever.
Knowing what to look for when buying a down comforter is difficult. We have made finding the best down comforter easy. We talked to the experts in the industry, tested and reviewed as many down comforters as we could find.
The truth is, the quality of down and down comforters varies widely. Some comforters that claim to be pure down feel more like they are filled with feathers. Other low quality comforters had their fill shift around so much that we were unable to stay warm. A low quality down comforter is going to be disappointing and a waste of money.
If you are looking for the best down comforter, any of the following would be a great choice.
Top Of The Line Comforter
If you are looking for a truly top-of the line down comforter, this is it. This is the best comforter we came across. This comforter includes:
- 700 Fill Power Hungarian Goose Down
- 390 Thread Count, Down Proof 100% Cotton Shell
- True Baffle Box Construction
- Made in the USA
This Hungarian goose comforter will make your bed feel like a king's bed. When you read about how luxurious down bedding is, this is the type of comforter that they are talking about. No corners are cut in the creation of this comforter.
There is a noticeable difference between a upper scale comforter such as this one and other more value oriented comforters. The level of softness and quality is unmatched. The down fill does not clump or escape from the comforter. It's as hypoallergenic as down can be.
This comforter is a good medium weight, which allows it to be used year-round.
If you have the money, and want to get a great down comforter, this is the one you should buy.
The only downside we found with this comforter is the price. The queen size has a retail price of $990, but luckily we found it for under $400 on Amazon.
Great Value Comforters
This is a European White Down duvet. This duvet offers surprising warmth for a 40-ounce fill. If you are looking for a year-round duvet, but want something on the warmer side, this is a great choice.
The fill comes from European duck.
When this duvet arrived, it looked a little flat, but after a bit of use it fluffed right up. This is true of many down products. The down can compress while being shipped, but will uncompress over time and with use. You can help this process along by ruffling your down comforter or duvet by hand.
As will all duvets, you will need a duvet cover.
This is a good quality, affordable comforter. It is comparable to some higher cost comforters, but is more affordable because it is made in China. The fill count is an impressive 50 ounce and the comforter shell is 100% cotton.
This is another comforter that came in a pretty small box. Over time if fluffs up, but if you want to speed up the process, place the new comforter in your dryer with the air-only (no heat) setting for about 10 minutes. The dryer will help shift the down around and unclump it to create the fluffy down comforter feel one expects.
This comforter is a great bargain because it offers the same high quality as American made brands, but at a fraction of the price.
This is a year-round hypoallergenic down comforter. This white goose-down comforter provides medium warmth for use year round. The white down looks great on a white bed. The cover is 100% cotton and the comforter is machine washable and dryable.
This comforter is great for a number of reasons. It uses a 14-inch baffle box construction to ensure that the down fill stays in place while you sleep. You can shift around, but the down will stay where it needs to stay to keep you warm.
The 40-ounce fill offers medium warmth and ample thickness. Down is great at regulating a comfortable temperature, and this comforter is good for all but the hottest or coldest of bedrooms.
While down is never 100% hypoallergenic, this comforter has be sanitized of impurities like dust, dirt, oil and dander. If you are highly allergic, we recommend avoiding down altogether.
The biggest con of this comforter is that it tends to shed a higher amount of fill. That is, the little down feathers escape from the comforter more so than the other comforters on this list.
55 ounce white goose down, 100% cotton cover, and a price point well under $200. This is a great deal for a mid-range down comforter. The quality, weight, and draping characteristics of this comforter are excellent. It is manufactured in China using Chinese-raised goose down.
The price of this comforter cannot be beat. I was very skeptical and wary of purchasing any sort of down comforter for less than $180, but this brand is wonderful. The fill is legitimate down, not feathers, and the quality is great.
